BLIND TASTING

Just for pros? Wine snobs? That's the past

When they started blind wine tasting in the ’90s, Rob Wilder and José Andrés weren’t experts, just passionate about wine. Win or lose, both laughed —and upped their wine IQ.

No crystal needed — even paper cups work.

Like most things, best with friends but also very pleasant alone.

Relax. No matter your wine IQ, you can have fun and even win. True story: a 21-year-old novice recently beat a Master Somm. We hope he’s over it.

Blind tasting doesn’t have to be intimidating

Wondering where to begin? Here. We've put together a step-by-step guide to minimize guesswork. (Save that for later.)

First, remember no two palates are the same. Heck, even your own palate isn't consistent day to day. Even Master Sommeliers’ taste buds  vary over time.

Secondly, we all have bias; any prior knowledge or sensitivity can influence the outcome. Hence, some believe the less you know about wine the better – not as much info begging for recognition.

BE A WINE
DETECTIVE

Any Somm will tell you: blind tasting is rarely about extraordinary talent

More than anything it’s detective work ... using clues in the wine.

Pair your deductions with our wine tasting cheat sheet below. Remember, there are loads of tips in the app you can call on while playing, or in your spare time just to keep learning. Look for the Lightbulb Icon.

Once you learn wine’s characteristics you begin deciphering its roots —literally.

WHY BLIND
TASTE?

The paper bag levels the playing field

Today, technology allows us to passively collect knowledge like never before. Like the odometer on an auto, tech allows humans to measure how many steps we take, times we stand, hours we sleep, calories we burn. There’s even a digital pill, so you can track whether you remembered to take your meds.

WineGame isn’t like that. The essence of wine is in its enjoyment, and as such, both you and the wine are mandatory to the game. (We love a sentence that includes both wine and mandatory, throw in game and it’s a hat trick.) With WineGame technology you taste, guess, then put the phone down and interact.

That’s when it gets good.
