Like your wine strong? We get it! Gary, our techie in chief, is a big fan. These bold reds from around the globe will leave you spinning. Literally. You may want to put Uber on speed dial, as most of these clock in at over 15% ABV.

 

TRY THESE:

Cabernet from Napa, CA or Australia
What to expect:  blackcurrants, bell peppers, eucalyptus, cedar, tobacco.

Carmenère from Argentina
What to expect: smooth, full, rich, blackcurrants, dark.

Mourvèdre from Bandol, France
What to expect: gamey, barnyard (yes, in wine), herbal, peppery, blackberries, truffles.

Negroamaro from Italy
What to expect: astringent, aromatic, spicy, dark, slightly bitter finish. Tip: the name means black and bitter.

Nero d’Avola from Sicily, Italy
What to expect: dark, soft, floral, black fruits, spicy, violets, similar to Syrah.

Pinotage from South Africa
What to expect: fruity, smoky, dusty, leathery, deep color, firm tannins, can have a pronounced candy-like pungency.

Priorat from Spain (grape is Grenache) or Gigondas from Rhone, France (usually a Grenache blend)
What to expect: gamey, strawberry, raspberry, spicy, peppery. Tip: often blended with other grapes.

Shiraz from Australia or Northern Rhone
What to expect: dark, tannic, smoky, peppery, chocolate, violets, blackcurrants, blackberries.

Zinfandel from California or Primitivo from Italy
What to expect: deep ruby, blackberries, peppery.  Tip: Zinfandel and Primitivo are the same grape.
